Top Charleston Southern 3-1
Macon, Ga.--The Mercer Bears women's soccer team made its home opener a successful one, with a 3-1 win over the Charleston Southern Buccaneers on Sunday August 21 at Betts Stadium.
Mercer ran its record to 1-0-1 overall (0-0-0 SoCon) on the young season, while Charleston Southern absorbed its first loss, falling to 1-1-0 overall (0-0-0 Big South).
"We challenged our team to come out with more intensity, to set the tone, and I felt we did that," Mercer coach Tony Economopoulos said. "We conceded an early goal again, kind of like we did against Campbell, Our team responded really well, to get a goal within five minutes which we always press them to do."
After Bri Richardson gave Charleston Southern the lead nine and a half minutes into the game, it was pretty much all Bears after that. Less than four minutes later Nicole Icen banged in her first goal of the year following blocked shots from Kendall Cook, and MacKenzie Gassie, to tie the game at one.
Before the half ended, Cook also got her first goal of the season, to go along with two assists. She has figured in three of the Bears' four goals this season. That gave the Bears a 2-1 lead headed to the intermission.
The only goal in the second half came from freshman Sydney Farr. She moved into the 18 yard box, deked a Buccaneer defender, then launched a shot past the diving effort of goalkeeper Sara Curtis, just inside the left post, for her first collegiate goal. That goal came with 18 minutes left and Farr had a couple of other good scoring chances to close out the game.
We got that third goal by Sydney Farr, first career goal so happy for her as a Bear, " Economopoulos said. "Overall proud of the team and the effort. It's tough on a hot Sunday like this how the temperature was , but happy with the way we responded."
