Gaither, Arteaga Spark Opening Night Win
MACON, Ga. - Freshman Fernando Arteaga had a college debut to remember, scoring two second half goals in helping the Mercer men's soccer team to a 5-2 victory over the Winthrop Eagles Thursday night at Betts Stadium. Dylan Gaither also starred for the Bears with a goal and four assists.
The game was the season opener for both teams. The Bears controlled play much of the night and struck first as Dylan Gaither scored on a penalty kick seven and a half minutes into the game. Believing it's better to give than receive, Gaither then dished out assists on all of the Bears' other goals.
An unfortunate bounce resulted in an own goal against Mercer, which gave Winthrop a 1-1 tie late in the first half.
Kadeem Agard, drove home a pass from Gaither from the right wing, to put the Bears on top. Winthrop, which never led in the game, tied it at two, on an Aiden Williams rocket into the top part of the net.
It was then Ousman Jabang, benefiting from Gaither's next assist, scoring with just over 30 minutes to play. Gaither and Arteaga then took over the show, connecting twice on headers by Arteaga, just a little more than three and a half minutes apart, sealing the win for the Bears. The Bears cruised through the final 23 minutes en route to the win.
Next up for the Bears is a trip to Atlanta to take on Georgia State Sunday night, August 28.
