Men's Soccer Team Draws With Ranked Georgia State

Earn hard fought 1-1 tie
If early season polls are an indication, the Mercer Bears men's soccer team should be opening some eyes around the country. The Bears traveled to Atlanta Sunday night, and played to a 1-1 tie with the Georgia State Panthers. College Soccer News ranked Georgia State 30th in the country in its preseason poll.
The tie puts the Bears at 1-0-1 (0-0-0 SoCon) and have an identical record as the Panthers, members of the Sun Belt Conference.
Mercer attempted 10 shots in the game, three of which made their way to the goal. Georgia State had 6 shots and two on goal. Each team had four corner kicks in the game. It wasn't until the final 10 minutes either team was able to score. Â
The Bears struck first as sophomore Chad Eldridge used every bit of his 6-foot-3 frame to soar over the Panther defense and head in a free kick from Kevin Kim. From about 25 yards out, Kim laid a beautiful cross to the top of the six-yard box, and Eldridge nodded it home.
As time was winding down, the desperate Panthers broke through as Matt Taylor was able to get his right foot on a cross from Carlos Luna, and off the half volley was able to strike for the equalizer with only 1:46 remaining in the game.
The Bears will continue a string of four straight road games on Friday Sept. 2, taking on North Carolina State.
