Win Raucous Affair, 4-1
Macon, Ga--There wasn't much that didn't happen in the women's soccer game between the Mercer Bears and Stetson Hatters on Sunday at Betts Stadium. Each team had a player draw a red card ejection...each bench drew a yellow card caution...great save on a penalty kick attempt...bloody noses, and more. Oh yeah, the Bears won 4-1.
Mercer ran its overall record to 3-0-1 (0-0-0 SoCon) and Stetson dropped to 1-3-0 (0-0-0 ASUN) on the season. The game was feisty throughout as a total of 10 cautions got doled out. Stetson's Kyleigh Thelen and the Bears' Lana Whitfield both received red card ejections, on their second caution violation.
As for the scoring, dynamic forward Ciara Whitely got the Bears on the board with some dazzling moves twisting Stetson defenders throughout the penalty area and then depositing a shot into the lower left corner of the net for a 1-0 Mercer lead 16 minutes into the game. Keelin Pray got her first goal of the season heading in a corner kick from Pace Stephenson and a 2-0 lead. Pray collided with the goal post on the play, and had to leave the game, although was able to return later in the contest.
Evie Wysong got Stetson on the board three minutes into the second half. And Stetson could have gotten a huge momentum boost when goalkeeper Sarah Grimmett punched a penalty kick attempt from Aliah Kitchens over the top of the cross bar. That kept the score 2-1, but Mercer coach Tony Economopoulos was glad Kitchens was undeterred.
Wowsers a little of everything in the Bears' womens soccer 4-1 win over Stetson. Coach Tony Economopoulos likes the fact the Bears never let Stetson gain momentum after key events, such as a save on a penalty kick from Aliah Kitchens pic.twitter.com/QfqPAWd64G
