Bears Can’t Lasso Cowgirls
9/15/2022 10:56:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Late Rally Snuffed Quickly
Stillwater, Okla.—The Mercer Bears women's soccer team scored a late goal, but the rally ended abruptly as the Oklahoma State Cowgirls answered quickly to defeat the Bears 3-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Oklahoma State (6-1-0 overall; 0-0-0 Big 12) had an edge in play early in the game until Mercer (4-2-2 overall; 0-0-0 SoCon) got its attack going on a free kick by Kendall Cook. She place the ball beautifully into the 18 box, and Nicole Icen went skyward and got her head on the ball sending it to the lower left corner. But Cowgirls' goalkeeper Jordan Nytes made a diving save, to keep the game scoreless.
Cowgirls' leading scorer Grace Yochum registered her sixth goal of the season, put a header from Megan Haines past Mercer goalkeeper Lindsay Bell, giving Oklahoma State a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute.
In the second half, Icen almost tied in the 57th minute, banging a shot off the left post. Then Yochum scored on a penalty kick with 13 minutes to play. The Bears refused to go quietly and Aliah Kitchens scored headed in a pass from Kylie Buchanan with just under four minutes to go, cutting the lead to 2-1. Hopes of a dramatic comeback didn't last long however, as Olyvia Dowell answered back for Oklahoma State just 16 seconds later, making the final 3-1.
NOTABLES
The Bears will face Delaware State at home Sunday Sept. 18 at 2 p.m. at Betts Stadium. Oklahoma State hosts Brown on Sunday.
