Bears Drop Two Matches

The Mercer Bears finished their first day at the Virginia Tournament 0-2
Charlottesville, VA.- The Mercer Bears volleyball team went 0-2 against their BIG10 and ACC matchups on the first day of the Virginia Tournament. The University of Maryland took the match 3-1 and the University of Virginia won 3-2.
"Very happy with the fight in our Bears today. We are still short-handed but not using that or any excuses," said Head Coach Derek A. Schroeder. "We gave 2 very good teams all they could handle and learned a ton of valuable lessons."
GAME ONE: VS University of Maryland
Set One | The Bears stayed close to Maryland and only trailed by 4 at the first time out (25-11).  The teams stayed close with two back-to-back kills from Annie Karle. While the teams stayed closed, Maryland would take the lead and set 25-22. 
Set Two | Maryland came out of the gate hot and took a 15-5 lead. The Bears chipped away at the lead with big kills from Paige Wagers and Lillian Beardsley. Mercer could not catch up and Maryland would take the set, 25-17.
Set Three | The third set would start off with the same energy as set one with Maryland having the lead at the first time out (15-12). The Bears would start to gain momentum with big kills from Rachel Bell and Morgan Verheyen. Mercer would pull ahead and take the set, 25-22.
Set Four | Mercer rallied from an early deficit in a set with a constant back-and-forth battle. Maryland would take the lead and keep it to take the set 25-18.
GAME TWO: VS University of Virginia
Set One | The Bears took an early lead and led 8-3 by the first time out. Virginia would keep the lead for most of the set and would take the set 25-21.
Set Two | Mercer would gain momentum and lead 9-4 by the first time out. The Bears would continue to hold the lead with multiple digs from Lexi Uhrhan. Mercer would keep the lead and dominate the set, 25-12.
Set Three | The third set would bring another close set with the teams 3-3 at the first timeout. The Cavaliers would take the lead with the Bears close on their tail. Virginia would pull ahead and take the set 25-17.
Set Four | Virginia would take a 13-11 lead at the first time out. The Bears would continue to fight and would tie at 22. A service ace and a kill from Annie Karle push the Bears to take the set 25-21.
Set Five | The Bears, looking to take the match, continued to fight and would trail 4-8 by the first timeout. Virginia would take the lead and set 15-12.
UP NEXT
Mercer will finish out the tournament tomorrow, Sept. 17 against East Carolina University at 12:30 p.m. The Bears will open up the conference play against UNC Greensboro on Sept. 23 in Greensboro, NC.
