Bears Drop Final Match at Virginia Tournament

Mercer finished play at the Virginia Tournament 0-3
Charlottesville, VA.- The Mercer Bears volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to the East Carolina Pirates on Saturday in the Virginia Tournament. In the two-day tournament, the Bears lost all three matches.Â
MATCH THREE: VS EAST CAROLINA
Set One | East Carolina started off strong with a kill and an ace. The Bears retaliated with big kills from Paige Wagers and Morgan Verheyen. The Pirates went on a 3-0 scoring run with multiple errors from the Bears. Mercer chipped away at the lead and trailed 10-4 at the first time out. The Bears came out of the time-out with kills from Lillian Beardsley and Wagers. More kills from Verheyen and Beardsley brought the score to 19-12 by the second time out. Both teams made several errors, but East Carolina held on to take the set 25-19.
Set Two | The Bears started off strong in this set with an ace from Beardsley and kills from Annie Karle and Wagers. The Bears continued to dominate and go on a 4-0 scoring run. Rachel Bell had back-to-back kills to push the lead to 8-2. ECU tried to gain momentum with two 3-0 scoring runs that ended with a service error. Mercer had the lead 21-15 at the second time out and took the set 25-18.
Set Three | The two teams stayed neck and neck at the beginning of the set with big kills from both sides. ECU took the lead after multiple errors from the Bears. ECU kept the lead with a 3-0Â run until the first time out (15-10). Mercer tried to chip away at the lead, but ECU went on another scoring run to take the set 25-18.
Set Four | Mercer came out hot and took an early 3-0 lead. The Bears kept the lead with kills from Wagers and ECU service errors. The Pirates fought back and tied it at 9. ECU kept this momentum to take the lead by the second time out, 12-9. Mercer chipped away at the lead with multiple kills from Karle and Beardsley. The Bears went on a 3-0 scoring run. That push forced ECU to take a time out at 20-16. The Pirates ended Mercer's scoring run with a kill. ECUÂ clinched the set after errors from the Bears and a kill, 25-18.Â

The Bears will open up conference play against UNC Greensboro on Sept. 23 in Greensboro, NC.
