Bears Fall in SoCon Opener

Lose In Greensboro
Greensboro, NC- Mercer finished its first match of conference play against the University of North Carolina Greensboro. The Bears lost 3-0.
Set One | The Bears stayed close to UNCG and trailed by only one at the first time out (15-14). The teams stayed close with major back-to-back kills coming from Lillian Beardsley. Annie Karle kept up the Bears' momentum, chipping away at the Spartans' lead. After multiple errors from Mercer, UNCG took the first set 25-22.Â
Set Two | The set started with a big kill from Karle. Mercer kept a three-point buffer and lead 15-12 by the first time out. UNCG came back and the teams tied multiple times throughout the set. The second time out had a one-point lead for the Bears. UNCG retaliated with multiple big kills; Mercer continued to battle with multiple kills from Karle who finished the set with nine kills. A big block and kill from Rachel Bell brought the Bears close to victory, but UNCG pulled ahead to take the set 26-24. The two teams matched almost identically in blocks kills and digs with UNCG having a slight advantage in HIT%.Â
Set Three | The Bears came out fighting and took an early 4-2 lead. The Knights retaliated with consecutive kills on a 5-0 scoring run. UNCG did not give up the lead and the Bears trailed 12-15 at the first timeout. UNCG began to dominate in kills and took an eight-point lead at the third timeout. Kills from Beardsley and Karle would slowly chip away at this lead. However, the Bears did not catch up and UNCG clinched the set 25-17.Â
UP NEXT
Mercer will continue its travel this weekend with a trip to Cullowhee, NC to face Western Carolina(Sept. 24). The game will start at 6 p.m. and can be watched on ESPN+.
