Bears Can't Mount Charge Against Catamounts

Fall In Straight Sets
Cullowhee, NC- Mercer finished its last match of the weekend against Western Carolina University. The Bears lost 3-0.
Set One | The two teams stayed close for the begining of the set with WCU pulling ahead for the first timeout (15-10). Mercer came back fighting after the time out with big kills by Paige Wagers and Lillian Beardsley. WCU went on a 5-0 scoring run and kept the momentum to take the set, 25-14. Mercer finished the set with eight total kills.
Set Two | Mercer took an early 3-0 lead with kills from Annie Karle and Morgan Verheyen. WCU quickly caught up and led 9-6 at the first time out. While WCU gave up points due to errors, it kept the lead for the rest of the set and won 25-13.
Set Three | The third set opened with a big kill from Wagers off a set by Kiera McCarles. The teams stayed close with WCU leading 9-5 at the first time out. Mercer stayed close, keeping it tied or a one-point difference. Multiple kills by Karle kept the Bears in the running as they tied the set at 20. WCU pulled ahead with kills and errors from the Bears to take the set 25-20. The Bears finished the match with 76 total attacks and 47 points.
UP NEXT
Mercer will return home next weekend to host the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (Sept. 30, 7 p.m.) and East Tennessee State (Oct. 1, 4:00p.m.).
