Mercer enjoyed edge in play
Blacksburg, VA—The Mercer men's soccer team, playing its second game of three consecutive games against teams receiving votes in national polls, continued to impress with a 1-1 tie against North Carolina State on Friday in a game at Blacksburg, Virginia. The game was part of the Virginia Tech tournament.
Mercer held a statistical edge throughout the game, attempting 13 shots, getting six of them on goal. The Wolfpack, of the Atlantic Coast Conference, had seven shots with three on goal. Mercer earns it second straight tie and is 1-0-2 on the season (0-0-0 SoCon). NC State is now 2-0-1 (0-0-0 ACC).
Kelly Conor who's been an early scoring threat for the Wolfpack, scored his fifth goal in just the third game, when he put NC State on top, just over a minute into the game. The Bears settled in and late in the first half, Andrew Anyafo found the bottom right corner of the net to tie the game with just under five minutes left in the half. Mercer is the first team to score against NC State this season.
The Bears controlled play throughout much of the second half, with several good scoring chances in the final 15 minutes. One of those close calls came tantalizingly close to crossing the goal line, but just was a little short.
Mercer will take on Virginia Tech, another ACC school that has gotten votes in the College Soccer News national rankings on Monday at 5 p.m. in Blacksburg.
