Tough Loss In SoCon Opener
Chattanooga, Tenn.—The Mercer Bears women's soccer team surrendered a late first half goal, and dropped its Southern Conference opener, 1-0 at Chattanooga Friday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Coach Tony Economopoulos had said the start of the conference season brings a new level of intensity to matches, and the opener against Chattanooga proved that. The teams were on even terms throughout the match. Just before the whistle sounded for halftime, the Mocs' (3-4-2 overall, 1-0-0 SoCon) Mackenzie Smith got control of a corner kick and scored her second goal of the season with only 19 seconds left in the first half.
That proved to be all the Mocs would need as the Bears (5-3-2 overall, 0-1-0 SoCon) couldn't get the equalizer. The Bears did create chances with a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks for the game. But Economopoulos said the breakdown before the half, was the difference.
The Bears will travel to Birmingham to play Samford on Sunday Sept. 25 at 2 p.m. Eastern time. Chattanooga continues its conference slate at home against The Citadel on Sunday.
