Bears Get Dramatic Tie At Samford

Penalty Re-kick Earns Draw
Birmingham, Ala.--The Mercer Bears women's soccer team scored on a penalty kick re-kick with 1:07 to play and earned a 2-2 with the Samford Bulldogs on Sunday at Samford.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Penalty kicks played a big part of the game, for both teams. After Ciara Whitely put the Bears in the lead, and Ella Simpson headed in a corner for Samford to make the game 1-1, Mercer's goalkeeper Lindsay Bell stopped Taylor Yount on a penalty kick by diving to her left and knocking the ball clear of the post to maintain the tie.
It stayed that way until the 80th minute. Samford got it's second penalty kick of the match and this time, Kylie Gazza was able to get it past Bell to give the Bulldogs the lead with only 10 minutes left.
The never say die Bears showed their resolve and with 1:07 left and earned a penalty kick of their own when Samford's Kaitlyn Maynard pulled down Aliah Kitchens in the penalty area giving the Bears the chance at the equalizer. Bulldog goalkeeper Emma Donley, in her first start of the season, made the stop on Lana Whitfield, and it looked like Samford would need to just run out the final minute. But the officials ruled Donley moved off the goal line prior to Whitfield's kick, giving the Bears another shot. Nicole Icen made no mistake putting the ball into the lower left corner, and getting the Bears the tie.
NOTABLES
The Bears return home for their SoCon home opener Friday against East Tennessee at 6 p.m. Samford moves on to play at North Carolina-Greensboro Friday.
