
Men's Soccer Advances on to the Southern Conference Semifinal

MACON, GA. –The Mercer men's soccer team moves on to the Southern Conference Semifinal following a 3-1 victory over UNCG at Summers-Taylor Stadium in Johnson City, Tennessee on Friday, November 3.
Mercer moves to 6-5-7 on the season, while UNCG moves to 2-10-5. The Bears would start off attacking earning several corners and set pieces in the first half. Mercer would strike first off the boot of senior midfielder Nick Wanzer in the 30th minute. After a failed clear attempt by a Spartan defender, the ball would end up at the feet of Wanzer who was able to find the bottom right corner of the net. The Bears would continue to apply pressure to the UNCG back line, but UNCG would find their equalizer in the 40th minute. The score was all even at 1-1 heading into the second half.Â
The Bear's relentless pressure in the second half would prove to be the difference maker. The Bears continued to possess the ball in the Spartans half. The Bears were able to break the Spartan's defense in the 62nd minute when Carlos Santamaria played a ball into a cutting Barzee Blama who heel flicked the ball into the back of the net, increasing the Bears lead to 2-1. The Bears would strike again four minutes later when William Pondeca dispossessed a UNCG midfielder and made a run across the full field and played a crossing ball on the ground which found the foot of Ehi Aimiuwu, increasing the Bear's lead to 3-1.
