HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer started the game on a 7-0 run as Western Carolina didn't score until just over five minutes remaining in the first quarter. Houpt scored the last four points of the quarter and Mercer held the Catamounts to just four first quarter points on one made field goal.
Like the first quarter, Mercer started the second quarter on a 7-0 run after a layup from Gonzalez to push Mercer's lead to 18-4. Then, Mercer's offense began to heat up as the Bears stretched their lead to 21 at halftime. Neal-Tysor made all four of her 3-pointers in the second quarter.

In the fourth quarter Mercer shot 50 percent from the field (6-for-12) on the way to a 68-44 win.
COACH GARDNER ON DEFENSIVE DISCIPLINE
"I felt like we played really well defensively the first quarter. We went into halftime with a significant lead and was very disappointed in our lack of discipline. We fouled. We put them on the free throw line 25 times, and we got out-rebounded significantly in the second half. We won by a good margin, but there's still some things we need to kind of clean up a bit."
NOTABLES
Mercer will play at UNCG on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 4 p.m.
