
Bears Drop Home Opener To Davidson, 20-14

Shannon Urey’s four goals led Mercer’s attack
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women's lacrosse team dropped its home opener to Davidson 20-14 on Sunday afternoon.
Each team registered 31 shots in the game, with Davidson putting 27 on goal to Mercer's 20. The Bears had more draw controls than the Wildcats at 21-16, but the Davidson had fewer turnovers with nine compared to 13 for Mercer.
Senior Shannon Urey followed up her four-goal performance at Virginia Tech with another four-goal game to go with one assist in a five-point effort.
Chloe Schaeffer and Erin Degnan each added three goals for the Bears on the day. Kayla Soltys scored her first goal of the season and was third on the team with four shots.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Back-to-back goals from Kayla Soltys and Shannon Urey – from a free position - gave Mercer a 3-2 lead midway through the first quarter.
A late goal with three seconds remaining in the first by Davidson tied the game at five after the first quarter.
Davidson began the second quarter on a 5-0 run to take a 10-5 lead less than five minutes into the second quarter. A man-up goal from Maddi Koury followed by Urey's second goal of the game cut the deficit for the Bears to three.
Leading 11-8 at halftime, Davidson got off to another fast start offensively in the third quarter, scoring the first three goals in the second half to push their lead to 14-8.
Mercer scored three unanswered to again get within three goals at 14-11 with just over three minutes remaining in the third quarter. Degnan's third goal of the game made it a 16-13 game with just over 11 minutes to play, but the Bears couldn't complete the comeback.
