
Late Goal Lifts Mercer To 15-14 Win Over American

Shannon Urey scored game-winner with less than two minutes remaining
Washington, D.C. – Mercer's Shannon Urey scored the game-winning goal with under two minutes to play to help lift Mercer to a thrilling 15-14 win at American University Saturday afternoon.
In a back-and-forth game, Urey's third goal of the game gave Mercer the win after the Bears relinquished a 3-goal lead to begin the fourth quarter.Â
American outshot Mercer 28-25 in the game, but Mercer goalie Kate Vandelinde had numerous key saves throughout the game in a 10-save effort.
American also won the draw control battle 17-13. Erin Degnan led the Bears with four draw controls and also contributed offensively with two goals.
Chloe Schaeffer led the Bears with four goals on six shots. On her birthday, Lyndsey Lewis had two goals as did Hannah Lind for the Bears.
Junior Maddi Koury had one goal and a career-high five assists for a six-point afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After American opened the scoring, goals from Lyndsey Lewis and Chloe Schaeffer put Mercer in front 2-1.
American responded with three consecutive goals to take a 4-2 lead in the first quarter. Kileigh Casey's first goal of the season evened the score at four before American scored with seconds remaining in the first quarter to take a 5-4 lead.
Schaeffer's second goal of the game followed two straight goals from Hannah Lind and Mercer took a 7-6 lead midway through the second quarter. Schaeffer's hat trick came with under four minutes to play in the third to give Mercer a 9-7 lead.
Mercer's defense stepped up in the third quarter allowing just one goal to American. A goal by Koury gave Mercer a 12-9 lead heading to the fourth quarter.
American tied the game at 14 with over seven minutes to play in the fourth. Urey's game-winner came with 1:53 left on the clock and the Bears held on for their second road win of the season.
