
Mercer Cruises Past George Washington in 19-7 Win

Urey’s six goals; 10 different goal scorers power offense
Washington, D.C. – The Mercer women's lacrosse team scored a season-high 19 goals, led by Shannon Urey's six goals to power past George Washington 19-7 Tuesday afternoon.
The Bears outshot George Washington 36-17, and had 11 different goal scorers.
Mercer took advantage of its man-up opportunities scoring seven goals with an extra attacker.
Mercer also won the draw controls 22-8. Erin Degnan had a season-high 11 draw controls and two ground balls to go with three goals.
Shannon Urey's six goals were a game-high as she now has scored at least three goals in all four games to begin the season.Â
Maddi Koury was also one of three Mercer players to score a hat trick in the game and she also had one assist to go with her three-goal afternoon.Â
Mercer goalie Kate Vanderlinde made seven saves with a .500 save percentage.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer got out to a fast start scoring four goals in the opening six minutes of the game to take a 4-1 lead. Gabby DiVirgilio's first goal of the season made it 6-1 Mercer after the first quarter.
Goals from Maddi Koury and Kayla Soltys (man-up) 18 seconds apart gave Mercer a 10-4 lead going into halftime.
Mercer continued its strong play in the second half, outscoring George Washington 9-3 over the final two quarters.
Degnan got things started offensively for the Bears scoring Mercer's first two goals of the second half to extend Mercer's lead to 12-5.
With Mercer leading 13-6 late in the third quarter, Katie Giglio's first goal of the season started a 6-1 scoring run to end the game for Mercer.
