
Homestand Concludes Against Samford

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's basketball program closes out a three-game home stretch against Samford on Wednesday, February 8 at 7 p.m. It is 478 Day at Hawkins Arena where fans can purchase two tickets for $4.78 here. The baseball and softball programs will be signing autographs ahead of the 2023 seasons. Â

Mercer leads an extensive all-time series with Samford, 74-47, overall. The Bears have not lost to Samford at home since 2001. Head coach Greg Gary is 6-2 against Samford during his time at Mercer.

SCOUTING SAMFORD
It has been over a month since the two teams met in the opening game of conference play. Samford is now 10-2 in the SoCon and in a three-way tie for first place. The Bulldogs won eight-straight games until losing to Furman 91-84 in overtime. Samford then faced another setback at Wofford but won the next two games heading into the matchup with the Bears.
The Bulldogs welcomed leading scorer Ques Glover back from injury two weeks ago; the junior averages 14.4 PPG. Logan Dye (14.1 PPG) and Jermaine Marshall (11.4 PPG) also average scoring in double figures. Sophomore A.J. Staton-McCray posted a stand-out performance against ETSU over the weekend with 16 points, six rebounds, and five steals.
RECENT ACTION
Mercer earned its fifth win in seven games on Saturday against VMI, 80-54. Harrison Drake and Braden Sparks combined for 26 points, including 21 from beyond the arc, in their first career starts. Drake also recorded three rebounds, one assist, one block, and one steal while Sparks finished with five rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
The 26-point victory was the second largest over a Division I program this season. 80 points scored was the most in conference play for Mercer this season. The Bears scored a season-high 13 three-pointers and only surrendered a program-best two turnovers.
