SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Mercer men's basketball program will open the Southern Conference Tournament on Friday, March 3 at 5 p.m. against The Citadel at Harrah's Cherokee Center – Asheville in North Carolina.

Mercer and The Citadel squared off in the final game of the regular season, resulting in a commanding 22-point victory for the Bears, 72-50. The Bulldogs were one of three opponents Mercer swept this season.

The Bears lead the all-time series against the Bulldogs, 23-8, and Mercer is 1-0 against The Citadel in the SoCon Tournament. The only postseason meeting between the two teams was at the conclusion of the 2015-16 season.

Since joining the Southern Conference in the 2014-15 season, Mercer is 6-8 all-time in the tournament. Head coach Greg Gary is 4-3 in the SoCon Tournament, including a championship appearance in the 2021-21 season.

The Southern Conference postseason awards were announced on Wednesday with Jalyn McCreary named to the All-SoCon Third Team and Jah Quinones named to the All-Freshman Team. McCreary led the team in scoring in both matchups with The Citadel this season, including 26 points, accompanied by 12 rebounds, to earn his second-career double-double.

The Citadel has lost nine of the last 10 games, including both defeats to Mercer. Two players rank in the top 10 for scoring in the conference led by Stephen Clark with 16.6 points per game, ranking second. Austin Ash, who missed the most recent game against the Bears, averages 15.2 points per game which ranks ninth.

The winner of Friday's matchup will face Furman in the quarterfinals on Saturday, March 4 at 12 p.m.
