Four different Mercer players with hat tricks in win
MACON, Ga.  – Four different Mercer players scored hat tricks and Kate Vanderlinde came up with seven saves as Mercer defeated Furman 18-13 on Saturday afternoon from Five Star Stadium.
With the win, the Bears moved to 6-0 in conference play with three Big South games remaining.
The Bears got hat tricks from Chloe Schaeffer (4 goals), Shannon Urey, Gabby DiVirgilio, and Kayla Soltys as they combined to score 13 of Mercer's 18 goals.
Furman never led at any point in the game, but hung around with the Bears for most of the day partly due to Mercer's 19 turnovers. The second most in a game for the Bears this season.
Mercer had a 29-20 shots on goal advantage and won the draw control battle 20-15.
Kayla Soltys tied her season-high with eight draw controls to go with her three goals. Ainsley Malamala led the Bears with four caused turnovers to go with three ground balls.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Furman tied the game at one after Chloe Schaeffer scored her first of four goals on the day to open the scoring.
DiVirgilio scored followed by two goals for Urey with just over six minutes to play in the first to give Mercer a 4-1 lead.
Schaeffer scored the first two goals of the second quarter to cap a 4-0 Mercer run and give the Bears an 8-3 lead. Furman scored three of the last four goals in the first half to make it an 11-7 game at halftime.
Sami Lowinger got the offense started for the Bears in the second half with back-to-back goals followed by Schaeffer's fourth of the day and Mercer led 14-8 with just under 10 minutes to play in the third quarter.
After a goal from DiVirgilio made it 15-9 Mercer, Furman would go on a 4-1 run to make it a 16-13 game with a little more than four minutes to play in the game.
Kayla Soltys scored two goals 10 seconds apart to put the game away for the Bears.
