
Mercer Wins Big Over Radford On Senior Day

The Bears allowed the fewest goals in a game this season
MACON, Ga.  – Mercer defeated Radford 18-2, giving up its fewest goals to an opponent in a game this season as the Bears remained undefeated in the Big South with the win on Senior Day at Five Star Stadium.
The win moves the Bears to 7-0 in conference play with two Big South games remaining.
11 different Mercer players scored in the game, led by hat tricks from Shannon Urey and Gabby DiVirgilio. Eight Mercer seniors made up the 11 different goal scorers.
Urey's three goals pushed her season total to 67 goals which leads the Big South and ranks second in the country.
Seven of Mercer's 18 goals in the game came from the free position as Urey, DiVirgilio and Jordan Bramble each had two free position goals.
The Bears outshot Radford 34-12 including a 27-8 edge in shots on goal.Â
Kayla Soltys and the Bears were dominant in the draw control circle as Mercer had 18 draw controls to Radford's six. Soltys had a season-high 13 draw controls which ties the Mercer single-game record for draw controls which she set last season.
Seven different Mercer players had at least two caused turnovers and Mercer goalie Kate Vanderlinde made five saves for a .714 save percentage.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Lyndsey Lewis opened the scoring less than two minutes in. The first five goals from Mercer were all scored by different players.
Hannah Lind scored her first goal in conference play to end the first quarter with Mercer up 7-0.
DiVirgilio and freshman Kaileigh Wallace each scored their second goals of the game within the first five minutes of the second quarter.
In the final minutes in the second quarter, DiVirgilio scored her hat trick and Lewis scored from a man-down as Mercer took a 12-0 lead into halftime.
After Radford got on the board to open the second half, Urey scored her hat trick followed by goals from Caroline Glus and Jordan Bramble to make it 15-1 Mercer.
In the fourth quarter, senior defender Carmella Fischer scored a free position goal for the first goal of her career.
