MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women's tennis program is preparing for the Southern Conference Championships set to begin on Thursday, April 20 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The fourth-seeded Bears will face No. 5 Chattanooga in the first round at 1 p.m.
Mercer beat the Mocs a month ago in the Bears' first SoCon match of the season. In this match, Mercer won the doubles point after victories by Mary Weston Courville/Teodora Ristic on court two and Marina de Diego Quinones/Kristin Yordanova on court three. Ristic, Courville, and Yordanova each went 2-0 on the day, and the fifth point was earned by Eden Schlagenhauf who won in the third singles slot.
Mercer and Chattanooga have faced off in the Southern Conference tournament just once as the Mocs won in the 2018 quarterfinals. The Bears' first win in the SoCon Championships came in 2017 when Mercer defeated UNCG, 4-1.
SEASON RECAP
The Bears finished 12-9 overall and 4-3 in the conference. Mercer went 9-1 at home with the only loss coming against third-seeded Samford. In the conference, the Bears downed Chattanooga, Western Carolina, Wofford, and UNCG.
Courville led the team in singles victories, going 15-6 overall and a perfect 7-0 in the conference. The senior finished the regular season on a nine-match winning streak in singles. Courville nearly beat the 12th-ranked player in the nation, Dasha Vidmanova of No. 3 Georgia, but fell in a 10-point tiebreak. Playing in the first singles slot, Ristic finished at 13-8 overall and 6-1 in the league. Her only loss was to seven-time SoCon Player of the Week, Laylo Bakhodirova. Freshman de Diego Quinones also reached double figure singles wins, playing primarily on court five.
All three doubles teams posted strong records led by Courville and Ristic at 14-7 overall and 6-1 in the SoCon. The duo's record is highlighted by a win over 71st-ranked Jess Dawson and Sara Snyder from Furman. The pair finished the regular season with seven-straight wins.
