Bears Go 2-2 at UNF Invitational

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer Bears Beach Volleyball team went 2-2 at the UNF Invitational this past Friday and Saturday in Jacksonville, Florida.
FRIDAY, APRIL 7
UNIVERSITY NORTH CAROLINA WILMINGTON| 8:00 AM
The Mercer Bears would beat UNCW 3-2 in their first duel of the weekend.
Lexi Polychrones and Jordan Paddock were defeated by UNCW's LaPata and Sharkey in a three-set match. The score of the first set was 24-26, the score of the second was 21-8, and the score of the final match was 16-14. Nicole O'Mara and Kate Hardie defeated UNCW's Bucci and Trimp in two straight sets. The score of the first set was 21-18 and the score for the second set was also 21-18. Sydney Benson and Jordan Morris would battle to three sets against UNCW's Thompson and Haggerty. The score of the first set was 13-21 in favor of the bears. The score of the second was 21-14, and the score of the final set was 16-14 in favor of UNCW. Kathryn Corbett and Alyssa Scoggins would battle and win a close match against UNCW's Folks and Barry in two sets. The score of the first was 21-13 and the score of the second was 25-23. Reese Hood and Hollis Engel would win their match against UNCW's Cutrie and McLaughlin in three sets. The score of the first set was 21-16 and the score of the second was 18-21, and the Bears would take the final set 15-9.
SAINT LEO UNIVERSITY | 2:00 PM
The Mercer Bears would defeat Saint Leo 4-1 in their second duel of the weekend.
Polychrones and Paddock would defeat SLU's Miller and Cortinez in two sets. The Bears would take the first set 21-14 and would secure the second set by a score of 21-12. O'Mara and Hardie would be defeated by SLU's Fredette-Huffm and Henderson in two sets. The score of the first set was 21-18 in and the score of the second set was 21-15. O'Mara and Hardie would set a new school record with their 13-match win streak this season. Benson and Morris would defeat SLU's David and Panko in two sets. The score of the first set was 25-23 and the score of the second set was 22-20. Corbett and Scoggins would beat SLU's Sandoval and Doherty in three sets. The score of the first set was 21-15 in favor of the Bears, the score of the second set was 19-21 in favor of SLU, and the score final set was 15-9, in favor of the bears. Engel and Hood would defeat SLU's Johnson and Potter in three sets. The score of the first set was 17-21 in favor of SLU, the score of the second set was 21-12 in favor of the bears and the score of the final set was 15-9.
SATURDAY, APRIL 8
#19 UNIVERSITY OF NORTH FLORIDA | 10:00 AM
The Mercer Bears would fall to UNF 5-0 in their first duel of day two of the weekend.
Polychrones and Paddock would be defeated UNF's Brooks and Fletcher in three sets. The score of the first set was 21-16 in favor of UNF, the score of the second was 16-21 in favor of the Bears, and UNF would take the final set 15-12. O'Mara and Hardie would be beaten by UNF's Murray and Espy in two sets. The score of the first set was 21-15 and the score of the second set was 21-19. Benson and Morris would drop their match against UNF's Rezentes and Camp in two sets. The score of the first set was 21-18 and the score of the second set was 21-10. Corbett and Scoggins would be defeated UNF's Feliciano-Sanchez and Murphy in two sets. The score of the first set was 21-10 and the score of the second set was 21-17. Engel and Hood would be beaten by UNF's McMillan and Wooldridge in two sets. The score of the first set was 21-10 and the score of the second set was 21-7.
#13 FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY | 2:00 PM
The Mercer Bears would be defeated by FIU 5-0 in their final duel of the weekend.
Polychrones and Paddock would be defeated by FIU's Pokorna and Vukobrat in two sets. The score of the first set was 21-15 and the score of the second set was 21-16. O'Mara and Hardie would battle against FIU's Mancinelli and Ribeiro but was defeated in two sets. The score of both the first and second set was 21-11. Benson and Morris would be defeated by FIU's Bianchi and Luini in two sets. The score of the first set was 21-14 and the score of the second set was also 21-12. Corbett and Scoggins would be beaten by FIU's Davis and Meyer in two sets. The score of the first set was 21-17 and the score of the second set was 21-19. Engel and Hood would drop two sets to FIU's Bielak and Pratesi in two sets. The score of the first set was 21-12 and the score of the second set was 21-16.
UP NEXT: The Bears will host the second Bears Beach Bash on Friday, April 14 and Saturday, April 15 in Macon, Georgia. They will welcome UNCW, Eastern Kentucky, and the University of North Alabama.
