Bears host Georgia at Hawkins in one of 14 home games
MACON, Ga. - Mercer head women's basketball coach Susie Gardner and the Mercer women's basketball team has released its 2023-24 schedule.
The 30-game schedule features 16 non-conference games in addition to the 14-game SoCon schedule.
Last season, despite falling on the road in the last regular season game of the year at Wofford, Mercer entered the game with a chance to earn at least a share of the regular season conference title. Last season, the Bears had two All-Conference players, and also return senior Summah Evans who was named SoCon Defensive Player of the Year.
Now entering her 14th season as head coach at Mercer, coach Gardner and the Bears will face another competitive non-conference schedule to gear up for Southern Conference play which is set to begin in January.
"We are once again playing a very competitive non-conference schedule that will prepare us for the always competitive Southern Conference," said head coach Susie Gardner. " We open up at Western Kentucky who has one of the most storied programs in the history of our game. Diddle Arena is an amazing place to play."
Most of Mercer's non-conference games are in the Southeast, although some of Mercer's non-conference opponents are teams the Bears have not played recently.Â
"We tried to keep it regional with our non-conference games," said coach Gardner. "We're excited about some of the new teams on our schedule, such as Tulane. Since I've been here we've never played Tulane, North Carolina A&T. We are also excited about going to the tournament in Savannah where we also have a lot of Mercer fans."
Highlighting the home non-conference schedule is Georgia who will make the short trip over to Macon to play Mercer on November 16. The two teams met last season in Athens, but this will be the first game between the two teams in Macon since the 2020-21 season.
The Bears will also welcome Austin Peay to Hawkins Arena. Coach Gardner coached at Austin Peay from 1996-2003, leading them to three conference tournament championships and NCAA Tournament appearances.
Conference Play
Mercer's first Southern Conference game is scheduled for January 11 at defending SoCon Tournament Champion Chattanooga.
The home-away format of league scheduling will see all seven conference opponents come to Macon. Conference play will determine the seeding for the SoCon Tournament, set to take place in Asheville, North Carolina, from March 2-5.
