Volleyball Opens Season At Crimson Tide Invitational

MACON – The Mercer volleyball team will lift the lid on its 2023 season, as well as the Chad Sutton era of the program, when the Bears head to Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Friday for the 2-day, 3-match Crimson Tide Invitational inside Alabama's historic Foster Auditorium.

The Orange & Black will open its portion of round-robin tournament play on Friday with a pair of matches. Mercer will go toe-to-toe with Saint Louis at 11 a.m., before closing out first-day action against Mississippi Valley State in a 4 p.m. afternoon matchup. The Bears will close out their stay in central Alabama on Saturday when they take on tournament host Alabama at 3 p.m.

Fans unable to make the trip to Tuscaloosa can still follow the matches for free via live statistics links provided by the Alabama athletics department. Saturday's matchup with the Crimson Tide will be video streamed live on ESPN+ and the Crimson Tide Sports Network.

Although unofficial, the Bears kicked off their season on a high note with a big 5-set exhibition victory at Georgia State on Saturday. Mercer trailed that matchup, 2-1, before capturing each of the last two sets, including a hard-fought 16-14 triumph in the fifth and final set.

The Orange & Black returns four starters and three other letterwinners off of last season's club that registered a 10-19 mark and a sixth-place finish in the always-tough Southern Conference. Sophomore Kiera McCarles, a 27-match starter for the Bears last season, is among the list of returners for the club.
