Former Mercer Standout To Make MLB Debut On Sunday

DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers announced on Friday afternoon that they have selected the contract of Woodstock, Ga., native Sawyer Gipson-Long, and that the former Mercer standout will get the start on the mound in Sunday's series finale against the Chicago White Sox in Comerica Park.

"I'm really excited to see him pitch," said Tigers manager A.J. Hinch. "This is a great organizational win."

A sixth-round pick of the Minnesota Twins in the 2019 Major League Baseball Amateur Player Draft, Gipson-Long was traded to the Tigers in 2022 and has posted an 8-8 record and a 4.33 earned run average on the rosters of both the Erie Seawolves (Double-A) and Toledo Mud Hens (Triple-A) this season. He has also logged 126 strikeouts in 99-2/3 innings of work, and has walked just 29 batters across that stretch while holding opponents to a sub-.240 batting average.

Gipson-Long appeared in 53 games (24 starts) on the hill for the Bears from 2017-19, and compiled a 13-5 record in 140-2/3 innings pitched. He struck out 165 batters and surrendered just 37 walks.
