TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The 20th-ranked Florida State men's tennis team surrendered a pair of games on both court Nos. 1 and 3 to grab the quick doubles point, and then took down Mercer in straight sets in all six singles matchups, to tally a 7-0 win over the Bears in the spring season opener for both sides on Saturday at FSU's Scott Speicher Memorial Tennis Center.
Â
Saturday's matchup marked the first competition for either side since early-November tournaments. It was the second time in four seasons that the Bears (0-1) have opened the spring portion of their regular season schedule in Tallahassee, Fla., while the Seminoles (1-0) improved to 4-0 all-time against the Orange & Black.
Â
FSU's tandem of Justin Lyons and Azariah Rusher registered a 6-2 victory over Mercer's Samuel Barrow and Victor Putter at No. 3 doubles, while Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc and Joshua Dous-Karpenschif tallied a similar 6-2 win over Samuel MacLeod and Lucas Dini on court No. 1 to give the Seminoles the doubles point.
Â
MU's duo of Nemanja Stefanovic and Marceau Fouilhoux held a slight 4-3 edge on FSU's Jamie Connel and Alex Bulter at court No. 2 when doubles play was stopped.
Â
Stefanovic was scrappy in his No. 1 singles matchup with Louis Pourroy, but ultimately succumbed 6-4, 6-3. Barrow also put up a battle with Lyons on court No. 5, but fell 6-3, 6-3.
Â
The Bears will close out their stay in Tallahassee on Sunday morning with a 10 a.m. contest with Jacksonville State at the Scott Speicher Memorial Tennis Center. The Gamecocks were scheduled to open their season on Saturday afternoon against the Seminoles.
