TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Senior Nemanja Stefanovic toughed out a straight-sets victory over Vanja Dobrnjac at No. 1 singles, but Jacksonville State did not taste defeat for the remainder of the match to fuel the Gamecocks to a 6-1 victory over the Mercer men's tennis team on Sunday afternoon at Florida State's Scott Speicher Memorial Tennis Center.
Stefanovic posted a 7-5, 6-4 triumph to give the Bears (0-2) their lone win of the contest, but Victor Putter gave Liam Day all that he could handle at No. 6 singles before succumbing 4-6, 6-2, 4-6. The Gamecocks (1-1) captured all five of the remaining singles matchups in straight sets.
JSU opened the tilt with a big doubles victory, walking away victorious on court Nos. 2 and 3. Lucius Soller and Vanja Dobrnjac registered a 6-1 win over Mercer's tandem of Stefanovic and Marceau Fouilhoux at No. 2 doubles, while JSU's Day and Alin Fatu upended Victor Putter and Samuel Barrow on court No. 3.
Lucas Dini and Samuel MacLeod had split eight points with Jacksonville State's Zach Murphy and Marko Milosavljevic when doubles play was halted.
Mercer will be back in action again on Friday when it makes its way to south Florida to take on Miami (Fla.) inside UM's Neil Schiff Tennis Center. A start time has yet to be announced.
The Bears are scheduled to open the home portion of their schedule on January 28 with a tri-match against Emmanuel and ABAC at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center.
