MACON – The Mercer men's tennis team will close out a season-opening four-match stretch away from home this weekend when the Bears make the long trip to south Florida to face both Miami and Buffalo in UM's Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
The Bears (0-2) will scheduled to open up their trip to South Beach with a Friday afternoon tilt against the host-Hurricanes (2-0), with first service scheduled for 3:30 p.m. The Orange & Black will close out their stay in Coral Gables, Fla., on Saturday with a high noon contest against Buffalo (0-1). Friday's matchup with the Hurricanes can be followed for free with both live video and live statistics links provided by the UM athletics department.
Mercer came away empty from two matches in Tallahassee, Fla., last weekend, dropping a 7-0 decision in their season-opening matchup at No. 20 Florida State on Friday, and then falling on the wrong end of a 6-1 neutral site battle with Jacksonville State. Senior Samuel Barrow continues to set the pace in the win column for MU with seven victories, all of which came during the fall campaign, while sophomore Nemanja Stefanovic walked away from Tallahassee last weekend with a 7-5, 6-4 decision over Jacksonville State's Vanja Dobrnjac at No. 1 singles.
Miami will skip into the weekend days removed from a perfect opening weekend that saw it take down both Georgia Southern and Wisconsin at home. The Hurricanes swept the afternoon against Georgia Southern, including a sextet of straight-sets victories in singles play, and captured singles wins on the first four courts to key the triumph over the Badgers.
The Bulls will be seeking their first team win of the spring season this weekend after dropping a 6-1 decision to Troy in a neutral site meeting in Fort Myers, Fla., on Sunday. Sophomore Theodoros Mitsakos, an import from Greece, came away with the lone decision for UB in that matchup – a straight-sets victory at No. 3 singles.
Following this weekend's matchups in Miami, the Bears will open the home portion of their spring schedule on January 28 when they lock horns with both Emmanuel and ABAC at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center.
