MACON – The Mercer men's soccer team had their highest scoring output of the season, taking down Winthrop 4-0 at Betts Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Bears came out of the gates hot, scoring twice in the first 20 minutes of play. In the 10th minute, Carlos Santamaria took a shot that caught the hand of a Winthrop defender, resulting in a penalty kick. Santamaria took the kick and slotted it into the bottom left corner to put the Bears on top.
A few minutes later, the Bears pieced together another attack when Santamaria sent a ball down towards the top of the box for Barzee Blama. The Winthrop keeper gambled on an aggressive play, meeting Blama at the top of the box. Blama collected the ball, turned, and put a shot into the back of the net to extend the Bears' lead. Blama now leads the Bears with five goals this season.
Making his first career start, Stephen O'Hearn recorded the first save of his career in the 30th minute, and the Bears took a 2-0 lead into the half.
The Bears earned five consecutive corner kicks in the opening minutes of the second half, but were unable to extend the lead. However, the Bears' attack did not let up. In the 55th minute, Segun Afolabi played a ball to Tomas Morales in front of the goal, who passed it back to Afolabi for a left-footed strike that went through the outstretched hands of the Eagles' keeper and into the top of the goal to make the score 3-0.
With the match already in hand, Mercer scored once more in the 63rd minute for the dagger. Fernando Arteaga received a pass five yards back from the box and played a ball to a streaking Tomas Morales on his right, who buried the ball into the bottom left corner for his first career goal.
For the match, Mercer held a 18-4 edge in shots and a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Bears had eight corner kicks to Winthrop's one.
