MACON - The Mercer volleyball team looks to bounce back against the Bulldogs in a Saturday night match up in Hawkins Arena on Nov. 9. The Bears will finish out the regular season at home with one match tomorrow night and two next weekend in the regular season finale.
The Orange & Black took their first loss in eight matches last night against the Paladins of Furman University. Mercer battled back from a 0-2 deficit to win set three and force a set four but it was not enough to defeat Furman's big block on the front line, ultimately falling to the Paladins 1-3.
The two squads faced off earlier in the season during the first half of conference play on Oct. 10 in Birmingham, Ala, resulting in Mercer taking just their third loss of the season 1-3. There are currently two ties at the top of the leader board in the conference standings, Mercer and Wofford tied for first and Samford and ETSU tied for second. Samford stands with a record of 7-5 in conference play and an overall record of 13-9.
MeMe Davis has been exceptional on the defensive side of the ball with 477 digs across 98 sets played, averaging 4.87 per set. In the match against Furman last night, the libero recorded 37 digs, the highest since Emily Rochefort's 43 digs back in 2012. Gia Padilla continues to be a rock on the court for the Bears registering her eighth double-double on the season. Brooke Phillips earned her fourth Setter of the Week honors this past week with 938 on the season and added on a conference and team-high of 61 service aces.
First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Hawkins Arena and the Bears will host Eras Night with Taylor Swift themed bingo, prizes, friendship bracelets and free posters. Admission is free and the match will be streamed on ESPN+ for fans who are not able to attend the match.
