
Cameron Named Finalist For Bill Schwanke Award

MACON – Veteran broadcaster Rick Cameron, who is in the midst of his 21st season as "Voice of the Bears", has been named one of five finalists for the Bill Schwanke Award which is named after longtime Montana Grizzlies Radio voice and presented annually to the top play-by-play radio broadcaster in FCS football.
Cameron, who is scheduled to call his 1,000th Mercer athletic contest next month in Hawkins Arena, is among distinguished listing of finalists for the award, including Richmond's Bob Black, Montana State's Keaton Gillogly, UT Martin's Davis Gregory and Southeastern Louisiana's Mark Willoughby.
A 2019 inductee into the Mercer Athletics Hall of Fame, Cameron has served as Voice of the Bears since 2004 and served as an administrator at Mercer from 1997 until his retirement in 2023. In addition to overseeing media relations for the University, he also served as editor of The Mercerian and provided marketing communications support to the Mercer School of Medicine, among other marketing communications responsibilities.
Prior to coming to Mercer, Cameron spent more than 20 years serving as an editor and publisher of community newspapers in Georgia and Alabama. A native of LaFayette, Georgia, Cameron is a 1977 graduate of the University of Georgia. His wife, Myra, spent more than 25 years in Mercer's athletics department before her retirement in 2022.
