MACON – Ines Hömberg Fernandez commanded the tennis courts in Mercer's match against Florida A&M last week, playing a pivotal role in the Bears' first road win of the season. Zaire Williams etched his name into Mercer men's basketball history by becoming the 42nd Bear to surpass 1,000 points in his collegiate career.
Hömberg Fernandez was crucial in the Bears' 4-1 road win over Florida A&M last Tuesday. The sophomore from Alicante, Spain, paired with Marina de Diego Quinones to clinch the doubles point in a 7-5 match on court one. Hömberg Fernandez sealed the match with a 6-3, 6-2 win on court six in singles action. After a successful showing on the courts, Hömberg Fernandez improves to 8-1 in doubles matches this season and 4-5 by her lonesome.
The Bears dominance on the hardwood continued last week with Williams headlining Mercer's 2-0 homestand. With 19:06 left on the clock, the graduate senior guard knocked down a mid-range jumper to reach a milestone that many could only dream of fulfilling. Williams dropped 13 points, five rebounds and three assists in the Bears' 95-77 win over UNC Greensboro before ending the week with 10 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals in a 95-81 win over VMI. The Brooklyn, New York, native transferred to Mercer from Wagner before this season and has lit up the scoreboard all year. Williams' 283 total points is third-best on the squad and his 49 threes leads Mercer and has been crucial to the Bears' 15-8 record.
