MACON – After a flawless week on the tennis courts and a dominant showing on the hardwood, senior Marina de Diego Quinones and junior Baraka Okojie were named Mercer's Student-Athletes of the Week for their performances this past week.
A native of Murcia, Spain, de Diego Quinones finished her last two tournaments with a perfect 4-0 record to help lead the Bears to back-to-back victories over the College of Charleston and Florida A&M. The senior began the week with a 6-3 victory in her doubles match next to Ines Hömberg Fernandez against the Cougars. The pair would walk away with another double win against the Rattlers three days later. De Diego Quinones made quick work of her singles opponents, securing a point for the Bears in two sets each match.
Two weeks removed from receiving Southern Conference Player of the Week honors for the first time in his career, Okojie continued to cement himself as one of the best guards in the conference last week. The Brampton, Ontario, Canada, native leads the men's basketball team with 373 total points and his 18.6 points per game is the third-best in the SoCon. Okojie's 19-points and three steals led the Bears to an 88-76 win over Western Carolina. Although Mercer fell on the road to Wofford this past Saturday, Okojie finished the contest with 27 points and eight assists.
