Bears Hungry For Victory Over VMI

MACON – The Mercer men's basketball team (9-13, 2-7) will play its second of three straight home games on Saturday against VMI (4-18, 1-8). A win would be Head Coach Greg Gary's tenth win over VMI in his Mercer career.

Saturday's game will be streamed on ESPN+ at 2 p.m. VMI has yet to capture a road win this season, and Mercer has lost three consecutive games in Macon, falling to 5-5 at home.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE BEARS

Mercer trailed the whole game and was swept in the season series with ETSU on Wednesday night. The Bucs committed 17 turnovers but out-rebounded the Bears by 14. Late in the second half, MU went on a 9-0 run and made it a one-possession game, but a fast break and made free throws in the final minute secured the lead for ETSU.

SCOUTING REPORT

VMI has only won one game since the two teams first met a month ago. The 13-point win over The Citadel featured five players in double-digit scoring. On the defensive end, they held the Bulldogs to 5.6 percent shooting from the 3-point line. The Keydets' Brennan Watkins leads the Southern Conference in free throw shooting, making 63-of-71 for 88.7 percent. Taeshaud Jackson is second in the SoCon in rebounding, averaging 10.1 per game.

LOOKING AHEAD

The Bears will face Furman for the first time this season on Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. in Hawkins Arena. The road match against Furman on March 2 will be Mercer's final regular season game.
