MACON – The Mercer men's tennis team rallied for four-straight points on court No. 1 to clinch a big doubles point, but visiting and 66th-ranked Stetson captured five singles matches to log a 5-2 win over the Bears on Friday afternoon at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center.
The setback marked the fourth-straight loss for the Bears (1-8) who will pack up their show and head to Atlanta on Saturday for a late-day matchup with 33rd-ranked Georgia Tech. The triumph marked the sixth-straight dual meet win for the Hatters (7-2) who improved to 15-2 all-time in the series with the Orange & Black.
Mercer's tandem of Nemanja Stefanovic and Marceau Fouilhoux breezed past Stetson's Riccardo Baldi and Lucas Olivier, 6-1, at No. 2 doubles to set up some early momentum for the hosts. Andrew Branicki and Lucas Dini were staring in the face of a 4-2 deficit at No. 1 doubles, but the MU duo rallied to capture four-straight games and help the hosts notch the big doubles point.
The Hatters stole all of the momentum in singles action, however. The visitors tacked up straight-sets victories on court Nos. 2, 3 and 5 to storm ahead 3-1 on the team scoreboard moments before Sami Ozzor finished off a 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 triumph at No. 6 singles to clinch the team victory.
The squads finished off the afternoon by splitting a pair of three-set battles. Tim Gennes downed Fouilhoux 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, while Stefanovic knocked off Haris Eminefendic 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.
Mercer's Saturday afternoon matchup at Georgia Tech (7-2) is scheduled for a 4 p.m. first serve at the Byers Tennis Complex.
