Bears Drop Saturday Matchup At No. 39 Georgia Tech
2/24/2024 7:04:00 PM | Men's Tennis
ATLANTA – Home-standing and 39th-ranked Georgia Tech surrendered just five games on the way to picking up the doubles point, and then captured four of the six singles matchups in straight sets, on the way to a 7-0 victory over the Mercer men's tennis team on Saturday at the Byers Tennis Complex.
Saturday's outing marked the first meeting between the Bears (1-9) and the Yellowjackets (9-2) since Feb. 14, 2016. Georgia Tech has now captured four of its last five outings, with its only blemish coming in a road match with in-state rival Georgia.
MU's duo of Andrew Branicki and Lucas Dini gave Tech's 32nd-ranked tandem of Keshav Chopra and Marcus McDaniel all it could handle at No. 2 doubles before eventually succumbing, 6-4. That match, coupled with Georgia Tech's 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles gave the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Georgia Tech surrendered just 10 combined games on court Nos. 2, 3 and 4 to secure the team win, while also picking up a straight-sets win on court No. 4 as well. Victor Putter posted a 6-3 win in his opening set with GT's Robert Bauer at No. 6 singles, but fell via a 10-7 superset.
Nemanja Stefanovic rebounded from an opening-set shutout at No. 1 singles to capture the second set at No. 1 singles with 22nd-ranked Andres Martin by a 7-5 count. Martin ultimately triumphed via a 10-7 superset.
The Bears will be back in action again on Wednesday when they make the short drive to the Randy Stephens Tennis Center in south Macon to battle local rival Georgia College (2-5) as part of men's and women's quad meet. Start time is scheduled for 3 p.m. and admission is free.
