
Mercer Defeats Davidson 17-10 For First Win Of Season

Kate Vanderlinde had 12 saves including the 200th of her career
DAVIDSON, N.C. -Â The Mercer women's lacrosse team went on the road for the first time this season and picked up its first win of the season by the score of 17-10Â over Davidson on Saturday from Davidson, North Carolina.
With the score tied at four after the first quarter, Mercer went on to outscore the Wildcats 13-6 the remainder of the game. Davidson's 10 goals were tied for the fewest its scored over its first five games this season.Â
Mercer outshot Davidson 38-31 including 28-22 in shots on goal. Each team won 15 draw controls on the day.
Maddi Koury and Gabby DiVirgilio led Mercer offensively as Koury had a game high four goals and DiVirgilio had a game high five points with three goals and two assists.
Freshman midfielder Ansley Walters had a great all-around game as she had a three point game with one goal and two assists. She also had four draw controls and three caused turnovers.
In goal, Kate Vanderlinde made 12 saves and had a 54.5 save percentage. Vanderlinde picked up her 200th career save in the game as well.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The two teams went back and forth in the opening minutes as Mercer got goals from Sandy Salit and Kayla Soltis as the game was tied at two. Mercer trailed 4-2 with two minutes to play in the first quarter before getting goals from Sami Lowinger and Kaliegh Wallace to tie the game at four after the first quarter.
Davidson scored the first goal of the second quarter, but Mercer would begin to take control of the game as the Bears would go on to score the last six goals of the quarter to take a 10-4 lead into halftime.
Mercer got out to a good start in the third quarter as the Bears were able to extend their lead to seven at 12-5 after goals from Lowinger and Soltys. Davidson would not go away as they scored the next four goals to make it a 12-9 game with just under four minutes to play in the third. Koury scored her hat trick with just over a minute to go in the third qurter to give Mercer a 13-9 lead.
Mercer's defense closed out the game in the fourth quarter while the offense continued to produce. The Bears held Davidson to just one goal in the fourth quarter, while four different players for Mercer scored in the quarter as Mercer rolled to a 17-10 win.
