HIGH POINT, N.C. – Home-standing High Point broke open an otherwise close match-up with a 7-1 scoring disparity in the second quarter to hand the Mercer men's lacrosse team a 14-7 loss in its 2024 season opener on Saturday.
Â
Six Bears contributed to the scoring on the afternoon. Graduate attack-man Parker Junod led the way for the Bears with four points (2 goals and 2 assists). Junior midfielder Christian Laureano and senior attack-man Jack Parolin each added a goal and an assist. Chase Cope, Michael Frederick and Jack Sullivan also scored.
Â
Mercer moves to 0-1 on the season and will play again on Sunday (February 4) at 11 a.m. against Hampton at Five Star Stadium. Admission is free.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Parker Junod opened the scoring seven minutes into the first quarter when Taylor Dooley found him open for an eight-yard step down shot which beat the goalie. This goal would be the opening goal of the NCAA Division I men's lacrosse season. Junod would find the back of the net one more time with two minutes remaining in the first. High point would end the first quarter on a four-goal run.
Â
High Point would continue their goal run, scoring four goals to start the second quarter. The Bears would find their third goal from the stick of Jack Sullivan. Sullivan cut down from the wing where Christian Laureano would find him heading towards the goal. High Point found the back of the net one last time before the half, making the score 11-3.
Â
Mercer started the second half with an extra-man opportunity which Jack Parolin would capitalize on. Parolin's goal would be the only goal score in the third. The Bears went on a run with three goals in less than a minute. The first came from Christian Laureano who was assisted by Jack Parolin, Michael Frederick was assisted by Parker Junod for the second, and Chase Cope found the back of the net for his first goal in the orange and black off the pass from Parker Junod. High Point would add two more goals before the final whistle.
Â
The Bears return to the field on Sunday (February 4) at 11 a.m. at Five Star Stadium when they take on Hampton. Admission is free.
