Beach Volleyball Splits Pair Of 3-2 Decisions, Defeats USM

MACON – Beach volleyball split a pair of 3-2 decisions on the final day of the Sun Belt Mid-Year Weekend. The Bears fell in the morning matchup against Coastal Carolina, but bounced back to defeat Southern Miss.

Against the Chanticleers, the No. 3 pairing of Reese Hood and Lexi Polychrones, along with the No. 4 pairing of Liv Diaz and Kathryn Corbett both defeated their opponents in straight sets.

The Bears, who matched up against Southern Miss in the early season, seized the opportunity to gain their first conference win.

Sydney Benson and Kate Hardie defeated their opponents in straight sets on court one, while Hood and Polychrones added to their win streak on court three.

Diaz and Corbett controlled set one, 21-17, but the Eagles forced a set three after defeating the Bears duo, 21-13. The pair was able to fend off any sort of Southern Miss comeback, taking the final set 15-9.

On court five, Hollis Engel and Alyssa Scoggins took set one 22-20, but dropped the next two frames 20-22, 12-15.

Mercer hosts its second Bears Beach Bash Wednesday, welcoming Emmanuel (Ga.) and Jacksonville State to town. Matches are set to begin at 9:00 a.m.
