Michael Morgan Joins Women’s Basketball Coaching Staff

MACON – Mercer women's basketball head coach Michelle Clark-Heard continued to build the foundation of her coaching staff on Thursday afternoon with the addition of 16-year coaching veteran Michael Morgan as an assistant coach.

Morgan makes the move to Middle Georgia after spending the last two seasons on the sideline at Hofstra. He has previous coaching stops at three other collegiate institutions.

I am really looking forward to working with Michael. He brings a ton of experience from all different levels," Clark-Heard said. "He has a great work ethic and is a tireless recruiter which makes him a great fit for the Mercer family. I can't wait to welcome Michael and his wife, Sharon, to Middle Georgia."

Hofstra displayed one of the nation's top field goal percentage defenses to highlight a 2023-24 campaign that concluded in the quarterfinal round of the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament. The Pride held 15 opponents to sub-35 percent shooting efforts, while also showcasing NCAA Division I's 37^th-ranked offensive rebounding squad as well. Defense was a calling card for Hofstra during Morgan's tenure, as the Pride also carried one of the nation's top perimeter defenses during his first season in Long Island, N.Y.

Morgan predated his time in New York with a six-year stint at Alabama A&M where he led the recruiting efforts for the Bulldogs, while also playing a key role in pacing AAMU to six appearances in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament, including a run to the semifinals of the 2019-20 event. Alabama A&M also reeled in 13 league victories during the 2021-22 campaign on the way to a runner-up finish in the final SWAC regular season standings. Morgan mentored more than 40 student-athletes SWAC All-Academic honors, and developed the post-player positional group, including 3-time All-SWAC selection and HBCU All-American Dariauna Lewis.

A native of Tampa, Fla., Morgan opened his coaching career on the prep level, compiling an 85-24 record across four seasons (2008-12) as the girls basketball head coach at Oldsmar Christian School. Nearly 70 student-athletes were presented with post-secondary athletic scholarships across his tenure, while the Eagles consistently finished among the prep national rankings as well.

His success on the prep level helped ignite the flame on his collegiate coaching career when he accepted a position at Saint Joseph's (Ind.) for the 2012-13 season. He also served a 3-year stint (2013-16) as assistant coach at East Mississippi Community College in Scooba, Miss.

Morgan opened his collegiate playing career at both North Carolina A&T and North Carolina Wesleyan, before transitioning home and starring as a standout post player at Trinity College in New Port Richey, Fla. He earned a pair of all-region accolades during his time in the black and gold, including a first team nod as a junior in 2007-08. He also concluded that season with a runner-up finish for region player of the year.

Morgan earned his bachelor's degree in biblical studies with youth emphasis from Trinity College in 2012. He married his wife, Sharon, shortly thereafter.
