
Mercer Earns Convincing Senior Day Win Over Winthrop

Mercer remains unbeaten in Big South play at 6-0
MACON, Ga. - Another complete performance from the Mercer Bears ended in a 22-5 win over Winthrop on Senior Day Saturday afternoon in Macon.
Senior Kayla Casey got the start in goal for the Bears and made five saves while allowing just two goals in the first half. Senior Gabby DiVirgilio led Mercer offensively with five goals and Caroline Glus also had four goals. Senior Maddi Koury also had a great game for the Bears with two goals and a game high four assists.
Mercer outshot Winthrop 36-14 including a 29-12 shots on goal advantage. Draw controls were 17-12 in favor of Mercer with Kayla Soltys leading Mercer with six draw controls. Winthrop had 17 turnovers with Mercer causing 11 of them. Gabby Brisbin had two caused turnovers to go with one goal and two assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After freshman Ansley Walters scored the first goal of the game, Winthrop responded with the next two goals to take its only lead of the game. Mercer scored the next nine goals in the first quarter to jump out to a 10-2 lead with DiVirgilio accounting for four of those nine Mercer goals.
The second quarter was low scoring with the Bears shutting out the Eagles in the quarter while scoring four goals themselves to take a 14-2 lead at halftime.
Mercer didn't let up to start the second half, outscoring Winthrop 6-0 in the third quarter with six different goal scorers. Abby Morrison and Krissy Rael each scored their second goal of the game in the fourth quarter for Mercer's two goals in the final 15 minutes.
