Bears Split Day One At Sun Belt Championship

MACON -- Beach volleyball wrapped up the opening day of the Sun Belt Conference Championship Thursday, toppling fourth-seed College of Charleston before falling to the top-seed Georgia State.

The Bears took a tightly contested contest against the Cougars 3-2, marking their first ever win in the Sun Belt post-season. The No. 4 pairing of Liv Diaz and Kathryn Corbett, and the No. 5 pairing of Hollis Engel and Alyssa Scoggins beat their opponents 21-14, 21-15 and 21-16, 21-17, respectively.

Nicole O'Mara and Jordan Paddock helped clinch the dual for the Bears, defeating Sofie Vogel and Maria Zweig with back-to-back 23-21 decisions on court two.

The Bears then dropped a 4-1 decision to the Panthers, with their lone victory coming from the No. 3 pairing of Reese Hood and Lexi Polychrones who dispatched their opponents in straight sets 23-21, 21-18.

Mercer now awaits the winner of the match between Southern Miss and Louisiana Monroe and will take the court at 2:30 p.m. ET.
