Bears Split Pair On Day One Of Palmetto Invitational

MACON – Beach volleyball split a pair of matches on day one of the Palmetto Invitational, defeating Morehead State 5-0 before falling to UT Martin 3-2. With their victory against MSU, Mercer now has 16 wins, the most in a single season in program history

The Bears had a strong showing in the sand in the morning matchup against the Eagles, with all five pairings defeating their opponents in straight sets.

The No. 1 pairing of Sydney Benson and Kate Hardie took the first frame 21-18 before taking a tightly contested second set, 22-20, while Nicole O'Mara and Jordan Paddock prevailed over Shea Hefner and Sydney Wyman with back-to-back 21-13 wins.

Lexi Polychrones and Reese Hood won on court three with consecutive 21-17 victories. Liv Diaz and Kathryn Corbett, who earned Sun Belt Pair of the Week, were once again stellar in the sand, winning 21-9, 21-15.

The No. 5 pairing of Alyssa Scoggins and Hollis Engel also earned a point for the Bears, defeating the Eagles pair 21-17, 21-14.

Against the Skyhawks, the No. 3 pairing of Lexi Polychrones and Reese Hood, as well as the No. 4 pairing of Liz Diaz and Kathryn Corbett added to their win columns, defeating their opponents 21-12, 21-14 and 21-14, 21-16, respectively.

On court one, Sydney Benson and Kate Hardie dropped the first frame 16-21, but took set two 24-22 to force a third, but could not overcome Jenna Vallee and Olivia O'Keefe, dropping the set 13-15.

The Bears will face conference foe UNC Wilmington at 1:00 p.m. Sunday before wrapping up the event against the Gamecocks at 3:00 p.m.
