Moorman, Engels, and Thomason each scored for Mercer
MACON, Ga. – Goals from three different players helped guide the Mercer Bears to a 3-1 win over in-state rival Georgia State on Thursday night from Betts Stadium.
Jada Moorman, Sara Engels, and Larkin Thomason each showed their composure in front of goal in what was three well worked goals for the Bears Thursday night.
Georgia State ended up with more shots than Mercer with 12 to Mercer's 11, but shots on goal were in favor of the Bears, 9-4. The Bears continue to be dangerous going forward as they now have 26 goals in eight games this season. The three goals scored by the Bears were tied for the most allowed in a game this season for Georgia State.
After a rather uneventful opening 15 minutes in which neither team recorded a shot, Moorman broke through with a spectacular goal in the 21st minute when Kendall Cook sent a cross into the box, where Moorman had a great first touch that set up her shot that went into the top right corner for her fifth goal of the season.
Then, in the 28th minute Moorman dribbled down the right side of the box and had her cross punched away by the Georgia State goalie. Sara Engels beat the Panthers' goalie to the ball and was able to find the back of the net for her first goal of the season which doubled Mercer's lead to 2-0.
In the 64th minute, midfielder Keelin Pray did well to touch the ball past a Georgia State defender and played a ball out wide to Anna Bachman. Bachman sent a perfect cross that went far post to the head of Thomason who's header went back across goal and into the side netting. It was Thomason's - team and SoCon leading -Â eighth goal of the season.
Georgia State was able to get one goal back in the 68th minute from its Preseason Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year in Aaliyah Faddoul, but was unable to get any closer as the Bears held off the Panthers for the win.
