
Bears Open Conference Play At The Citadel And Western Carolina

MACON - The Mercer volleyball team is on the road again as they travel to Charleston, S.C. and Cullowhee, N.C. for their first conference match ups of the 2024 season against The Citadel and Western Carolina. The 10-3 Bears look to keep their record-breaking season going and pick up their first SoCon wins of the season.
The Bears closed out non-conference play at the Owls Paradise Classic in Boca Raton, Fla. going 1-3 on the weekend. Skye Ekes continues to dominate on the front line for the Bears recording 177 kills across Mercer's first 13 matches. Graduate setter Brooke Phillips still leads the NCAA in total service aces with 30 and currently has 117 digs and 450 assists for the Bears. Gia Padilla has been a rock for Mercer recording multiple double doubles and is the second-highest on the team in kills and digs with 125 and 119, respectively. Freshmen Lou Johnson and MeMe Davis have been impactful on defense with Johnson's 31 blocks and Davis' 208 digs.
The Citadel had a tough non-conference schedule but came out of it with an even record of 6-6 and Western Carolina enters the weekend with a record of 7-7. The Bulldogs lost a marathon five-set match to the Catamounts on Sept. 25Â with the fourth set concluding 41-43 and Western Carolina coming out on top.
First serve is schedule for 7:00 p.m. on Saturday against The Citadel at the McAlister Field House and 6:00 p.m. on Sunday against Western Carolina at Ingles Court. Both matches will be streamed on ESPN+ and will have live stats available.Â
