AUBURN, Ala. – Auburn's 15th-ranked tandem of Will Nolan and Billy Blaydes got the better end of a 6-4 decision with Mercer's Nemanja Stefanovic and Marceau Fouilhoux to fuel a doubles sweep, and the Tigers tacked up a quintet of straight-sets singles wins to finish off a 7-0 shutout of the visiting Bears on Friday afternoon at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
Auburn had already picked up the doubles point by virtue of wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles, but the doubles tilt on Court No. 1 proved to be the marquee tilt of the day.
Blaydes registered a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles to continue the surge for the home-standing Tigers who clinched the team win a short time later following victories on Court Nos. 1 and 5 as well. Auburn also picked up straight-sets wins at Nos. 4 and 2 singles.
Freshman Shingo Masuda logged the only set victory for the Bears on the day with a 6-4 comeback triumph in his opening set with Thomas Kennedy. Kennedy, however, fought off a match point and claimed the second set with a 7-5 score, and then finished off Masuda by virtue of a 10-1 tiebreaker set.
The Orange & Black will close out a season-opening two-match road trip on Saturday when they head to Athens to battle in-state foe Georgia (0-0) at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Start time is scheduled for noon.
