Stefanovic Drops Heartbreaker As Mercer Falls To Georgia

MACON – Sixteenth-ranked Thomas Paulsell capped a two-set comeback effort against Mercer's Nemanja Stefanovic with an 11-9 triumph in the tie-breaking superset to help Georgia finish off a 7-0 shutout of the visiting Bears on Saturday afternoon at UGA's Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Facility.

It was the second setback to a Southeastern Conference squad in 24 hours for the Bears (0-2) who dropped their dual meet opener at Auburn on Friday in Alabama. Saturday's win was the season-opening match for the Bulldogs (1-0).

Georgia yielded just one game in capturing doubles action on Court Nos. 1 (6-0) and 2 (6-1) to collect the key doubles point, and then tallied five straight-sets wins in singles play to clinch the team win. Stefanovic toughed out a 6-4 win in his opening set with Paulsell, but the UGA senior captured a 7-6 win in the second set, before delivering the heartbreak in the tiebreaker.

The Bears will open up a three-match home stand on January 25 when they take on North Florida (1-0) at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center. First serves are scheduled for 11 a.m. and admission is free.
