
Two Upsets Highlight Opening Day Of Mercer Pro Tennis Classic

MACON – American Ava Rodriguez shocked sixth-seeded Anastasiia Gureva in three sets, while Argentinian Lucia Peyre upended 16th-seeded Bella Payne, to highlight qualifying action on Monday at the Mercer Pro Classic at the John Drew Smith Tennis Center.

Rodriguez registered 6-2 wins in advancing to Tuesday's second-round action in the qualifying draw of the annual International Tennis Federation (ITF)-sponsored professional tennis tournament in north Macon. Peyre took care of Payne in straight sets to book her spot in Tuesday's qualifying action.

The qualifying bracket will resume on Tuesday with four matchups, and will wrap up with four more contests immediately following. Top-seeded Renata Zarazua of Mexico will battle one of the eight qualifying players in the main draw of singles competition which is slated to get underway on Tuesday afternoon.

Second-seeded Darja Vidmanova (Czechslovakia) will go toe-to-toe with Poland native Olivia Lincer in Tuesday evening's featured match at 7 p.m.

Spaniard Alicia Herrero and American Dalayna Hewitt will team up to face Americans Ayana Akli and Eryn Cayetano to headline main draw doubles action that is expected to get underway at approximately 5 p.m.

The Mercer Tennis Classic, in partnership with the Macon Area Tennis Association and Macon-Bibb County, will run through Sunday, with all matches taking place at the John Drew Smith Tennis Center.
