MACON – Two more seeded doubles teams saw their runs come to an end via upset, while seeded players prevailed in three of five matchups in the singles main draw, as opening-round action at the Mercer Tennis Classic wrapped up on Wednesday at the John Drew Smith Tennis Center.
Â
Top-seeded Renata Zarazua was joined by fourth-seeded Emerson Jones, and seventh-seeded Anastasia Gasanova in the winner's column on Tuesday in north Macon, while fifth-seeded Iryna Shymanovich and sixth-seeded Anouk Koevermans saw their tournament runs come to an early end.
Â
Upsets were rampant in doubles action as well with the ousting of the second-seeded sister tandem of Carmen and Ivana Corley, as well as third-seeded Jessica Failla and Anna Rogers. The Corleys fell in straight sets, 7-6 (7-1) and 7-5, while Failla/Rogers succumbed in a third-set tiebreaker, 10-6, despite winning the opening set of their matchup with Gasanova/Yuliya Hatouka.
Â
Zarazua, ranked No. 81 in the latest rankings by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), will get a short rest before getting the second round started at 10 a.m. on Thursday against Sofia Cabezas Dominguez. The top-seeded duo of Shymanovich/Maria Kozyreva will take on Mary Stoiana/Darja Vidmanova in the featured doubles match at 7 p.m.
Â
The Mercer Tennis Classic, in partnership with the Macon Area Tennis Association and Macon-Bibb County, will run through Sunday, with all matches taking place at the John Drew Smith Tennis Center.
